Castle History of the Hotel Schloss Mönchstein*****

1350 -

"THE MÖNCHSTEIN" was first documented as being called the "Tetelheimer Turm" (Tetelheimer Tower).

1531 -

Virgil Fröschlmoser built the Meyerhaus, stables, a barn and a chapel onto the castle. He also built a stone tower onto the rock and, shortly afterwards, a cistern.

1622 -

The castle was sold to the Mülln convent.  Archbishop Paris Lodron had many fortifications built, such as the Monika fort, Augustiner fort and the train bridge.

1654 -

The St. Peter’s monastery acquired the property for the "educated professoris " to "recover from difficult mental work".  It was then called the "Professors castle". Large celebrations were held to mark the opening of the chapel on 3rd August 1661. What is now the tower room was then used as an astronomical observatory. 1815 -

... with a belt for hospitality; the Princess of Liechtenstein had "her stone bench" to look over Salzburg by the summerhouse and the poet, Alexander von Humboldt wrote enthusiastically about this "piece of paradise" in the Mozart city. In 1887 the bank clerk, Leitner, had a street built from Mülln to the lift station that was designed by him up to the Mönchsberg. This lift ...

1895 -

... was acquired by the city council and existed until the 2nd World War; only then was the Mönchsberg lift relocated to within the rock.

1948 -

The castle was turned into a hotel.

1956 -

The von Mierka family acquired the property and renovated it to be the only 5-star hotel in Salzburg.

1984 -

Dr. Klaus Besser adds the "Mönchstein" to the group of "100 best hotels in Europe".

1984 -

"Hideaway Report" awards the hotel with the title, "most enchanting city hotel in the world".

1986 -

The "American Gold Star for Quality" distinction follows from B.I.D. - USA.

1988 -

The hotel became a member of the "Relais & Chateau" group- the "best hotel chain in the world".

1989 -

Celebrations at the opening of the "Salzburg Wedding Wall", and 3 years later, the "Castle Christening Register".

1993 -

The "PARIS LODRON" restaurant is awarded 2 “chefs hats” by Gault Millau, thereby becoming considered as the best restaurant in the city of Salzburg.

1995 -

The 500th wedding couple says “I do” in the castles' chapel.

1996 -

HOTEL SCHLOSS MÖNCHSTEIN SALZBURG***** becomes a founding member of the European Castle Hotels.

1997 -

Opening of the "Mönchstein Panorama Route", which leads to the Mönchsberg-old town lift.

2000 -

Ownership of the hotel passes to a Tyrolean hotelier family.

2003 -

The hotel is completely renovated and expanded with attention to detail and due admiration for the tradition-rich castle.  The castle is ready to shine in all its finery in time for the festival.

2004 -

Distinguished with a star award from the Trade and Commerce centre in Austria - Hotellerie division 2004 – as the best 5-star hotel in Austria.

2005 -

The hotel is taken over by Dr. Hans-Peter Wild.

2008 -

Opening of the Mönchstein SPA.

2008 -

The Restaurant Schloss Mönchstein is distinguished with 2 “chefs hats” by Gault Millau.
